UK: Ian Katz, new program director at Channel 4
Katz will join the network in January as programming chief and replaces Ralph Lee, who has served as interim chief creative officer since Hunt’s departure in September, following a near seven-year stint. Hunt, meanwhile, was hired by Cupertino, California-based tech giant Apple as creative director of Europe for worldwide video.
As editor of BBC Newsnight, he was awarded with the RTS Scoop of the Year for his investigation into Kids Company that led to its closure, as well as 'a series of revelations about bullying within the Conservative party and an ongoing investigation into the causes and handling of the Grenfell disaster'.
He previously served as deputy editor and head of news at British newspaper The Guardian between 2008 and 2013. During this time, he oversaw the Wikileaks and phone hacking investigations, and led The Guardian‘s strategy to become a global leader on environment coverage.
'Ian is an inspirational leader who assiduously builds and nurtures talented and empowered teams,', said Channel 4′s CEO Alex Mahon, and added: 'He has fantastic instincts and intelligence, huge editorial strength and is a proven creative and digital innovator, who lives and breathes the Channel 4 values.'
'Channel 4′s deeply held values and relentlessly challenging sensibility have never been more important or relevant and I feel incredibly privileged to play a part in shaping the next stage of its remarkable journey', completed Katz .
The move comes on the heels of David Abraham, C4′s chief executive, announced plans to depart at the end of the year. Abraham, who has led C4 since 2010, said that he was stepping down in order to develop personal plans to launch a media enterprise in 2018.
